The young Great Blue Herons in this nest are getting really big and active, and will soon fly the nest to fend for themselves. But in the meantime, the dedicated mom is still there, feeding and caring for them until the time comes. This particular nest is one of only 3 great blue heron nests on the tiny island, surrounded by dozens of cormorant nests in the many trees. There used to be more herons, but the cormorants are taking over.
Great Blue Herons nest mainly in trees, but will also nest on the ground, on bushes, and on man-made structures. Males arrive at the colony and choose the nest sites; then they court and display to attract females. Colonies can consist of 500 or more individual nests, with multiple nests per tree built 100 or more feet off the ground. The nest is built mostly by female, with material gathered mostly by male.
