Artist's Description
I was thrilled to be able to share a blind with a friend, hoping to see and photograph some Red Fox kits. We were in the tent before 6 a.m., and finally at 7:15 a.m. the first fox kit showed up. After about a half hour, a sibling joined in, and then the fun started with them wrestling and chasing each other, and occasionally -- a hug!
Red Fox kits start playing outside the den when they are about a month old. Their senses are on full alert and much utilized as they get to know their new environment. Every leaf and stick is picked up and investigated, very insect that flies by is snapped at, and every scent is caught. The mother begins feeding her kits regurgitated food, but eventually she will bring them live prey to "play" with and eat. Playing with live prey helps the young kits develop the skills they will need for hunting. The kits leave their mother when they are about seven months old.
