Description
Male and female Golden-cheeked Woodpecker together in a palm tree. This is a mating pair; the two would only be together if they were sweeties, otherwise they would not be so tolerant of one another's presence. I was excited to get a photograph of the two together.
Often noisy and conspicuous, the golden-cheeked woodpecker's calls include a sneezy "cháco cháco." Golden wash to cheeks is inconspicuous, but big black eye patch is diagnostic among similar "ladder-backed" woodpeckers. Male has flame-red crown patch and female has pale grayish crown. This woodpecker (Melanerpes chrysogenys) is a species of bird in the family Picidae. It is endemic to Mexico, in the western, and southwestern coastal strip on the Pacific Ocean, and the western bordering regions of mountains of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. They are distributed in the coast from Sinaloa to Colima. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, and heavily degraded former forest.
Photo taken on December 19, 2022, near La Penita on Mexico's Pacific coast.
