Description
Momma Great Horned Owl is feeding her three babies and herself with parts of a rabbit that she caught. One of the babies is evidently more interested in what the photographer is doing than in eating! The mom is an excellent hunter and takes wonderful care of her babies, staying nearby to keep an ever watchful eye on the nest and her little ones. These babies are getting bigger and as night falls, they become active, flapping their wings and hopping about in the nest Within a week or two they will fledge the nest, but momma will still keep feeding them until they're ready to fend for themselves.
With its long, earlike tufts, intimidating yellow-eyed stare, and deep hooting voice, the large Great Horned Owl is the quintessential owl of storybooks. Aggressive and powerful in its hunting, this powerful predator can take down birds and mammals even larger than itself, but it also dines on daintier fare such as tiny scorpions, mice, and frogs. Great Horned Owls begin nesting very early in the north, and their deep hoots may be heard rolling across the forest on mid-winter nights. It’s one of the most common owls in North America, equally at home in deserts, wetlands, forests, grasslands, backyards, cities, and almost any other semi-open habitat between the Arctic and the tropics.

Love the way the color of the tree and the color of the owls are so perfectly matched, isn't nature grand.

I am always amazed at the way wildlife can camouflage and blend in with their surroundings, as these owls do here. I am also always amazed at your photography!

I keep gravitating towards your owl gallery because of my love for owls. Your imagery gives its viewers a glimpse into the natural world that most would never see first hand, and what a gift that is.

Jaw dropping, incredible photograph. Judy you might be the best photographer ever. This dead wood must have made even seeing them in there almost impossible because of the color and texture match that's going on. The only reason you can see them is those big Amber eyes. What an incredibly amazing photograph. It would make a mind blowing jigsaw puzzle.
