Description
Green-winged Teals can look more blue than green when the light hits them in a certain way, and that is true for the drake in this photo. The original photo had a mess of tangled tree branches as a background, so I replaced it with this textured background. I think it makes him look quite beautiful, don't you?
The little Green-winged Teal is our smallest dabbling duck in North America. Very common and widespread, remaining through the winter farther north than other teal. In flight, both sexes flash deep-green wing patches (specula). Flocks in flight appear very fast because of small size, with rapid twisting and turning in unison. Look for them on shallow ponds and in flooded fields, and listen for the male’s decidedly non-ducklike whistle. These common ducks breed along northern rivers; wintering flocks can number as many as 50,000.
