The wings of Rig-billed Gull (Latin is larus delawarensis) caught the last rays of golden light as the sun slid over the horizon. I love how its wings and tail are lit from the back, making this gull seem to be almost angelic as s/he soars through the air.
Amazing acrobats of the sky and familiar to most of us, Ring-billed Gulls cleverly grab any tossed tidbit from on high. They hang out in parking lots, garbage dumps, beaches, and fields, often in very large groups, and are quite comfortable around humans. They are always very sociable birds, and as a result, concentrations at nesting colonies or at feeding sites may run into the thousands. Most Ring-billed Gulls nest in the interior of the continent, near freshwater rather than near the ocean, so you may see them inland near lakes and other bodies of water.
