Description
I was driving along a rural dirt road in northeastern Colorado, when I spied this very handsome male Ring-necked Pheasant near the side of the road in a corn field. He kindly posed for a few shots before he ran away.
The Ring-necked Pheasant, fairly well adapted to open country, has been introduced from Asia as a game bird in North America and thrives in the northern prairies. The males are extremely colorful, while the brown females blend in with their field habitat. In spring and summer, one can occasionally see the males performing their calling and wing-flapping display in open areas.
