It was still dark in the very early morning, but already the Sandhill Cranes ( Grus canadensis ) were taking off from the lake and were flying to the corn fields, where they spend their day eating and hanging out. Because it was still quite dark, I was not able to get a fast shutter speed, so decided to try some panned shots with a slow shutter, which resulted in a motion blur and a feeling of speed. I especially like this shot of a crane running on the freezing water just as s/he was taking off.
Thousands of Sandhill Cranes winter over at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico, along with thousands of Snow Geese. These tall cranes are so beautiful and elegant, and group together in great numbers in the fields, lakes and sky, filling the air with their amazing distinctive magical rolling cries.
Photo taken on January 10, 2019, at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.
