Description
These two Mangrove Swallows (tachycineta albilinea), were having a serious argument. The one on the right had pecked hard at the one on the left before this pic was taken. It is most likely a male-female couple with the female on the right, and they're having some domestic dispute. The argument continued after this pic was taken, with the one on the left then pecking at the one on the right and more shouting at each other. Wish I understoof "swallow" talk! The pic was taken on a beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, near a small river. The perch was some driftwood from which a bunch of swallows would fly off looking for insects and then fly back.
The Mango Swallow is a small swallow of tropical lowlands. Usually near water, from mangroves and coastal lagoons to rivers well inland; mainly in small groups, often mixed with other species of swallows. In its range, the big white rump patch is distinctive. Adult is metallic blue above with small white chevron across base of bill; gleaming white below. Juvenile has dusky gray-brown upperparts with white rump, looks like adult by early winter.
Photo taken on November 6, 2022, on a Puerto Vallarta beach, in Mexico.
