Description
White-breasted Nuthatch feeding baby. The young one is getting big and probably will be fending for itself very soon, but so far the parents are still feeding him or her. It is hard work for parents with a bunch of young ones! This was taken up in the hills near Boulder, on the property of some friends.
White-breasted Nuthatches are active, agile little birds with an appetite for insects and large, meaty seeds. They get their common name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark or other crevices, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. White-breasted Nuthatches may be small but their voices are loud; its nasal calls are typical and familiar sounds of winter mornings in deciduous woods over much of North America.
Photo taken on July 17, 2016, near Ward, Colorado.

What a wonderful capture, Judi! The Mom does look a little frazzled - her baby looks bigger than she is. I love watching Nuthatches so thank you for sharing this wonderful photo with us!
