Artist's Description
An eagle or falcon flying over was probably the reason for this massive Snow Goose explosion at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. It was a spectacular and deafening swirling cacophony as thousands of Snow Geese took to the air simultaneously! They had been hanging out and eating in the corn fields. I clicked my shutter in amazement as the birds flew overhead.
I used Topaz Impression digital software to give a heightened sense of the swirling mass.
Getting to observe huge flocks of Snow Geese descend from the sky, amid a cacophony of honking, is an amazing experience -- a little like standing inside a snow globe! These loud geese can cover the ground in a snowy blanket, since often there are thousands of them together. Among them, you might occasionally see a darker version —a color variant called a Blue Morph or a “Blue Goose.” Snow Geese are now among the most abundant waterfowl on the continent. Some of them winter over at Bosque del Apache NWR...
