Description
These two American Avocets were never far apart on the morning when I was photographing them. They were a couple, and displayed sweet behavior towards each other after mating. American Avocets place their nests directly on the ground without the benefit of shrubs to provide shade, and in this image, they may have been tending to a nest hidden behind the rock.
To keep the eggs from overheating during incubation, these birds dip their belly feathers in water. The chicks leave the nest within 24 hours of hatching. Day-old American Avocets can walk, swim, and even dive to escape predators. American Avocets wade in shallow water of lakes and ponds, filtering tiny food items from just below the surface.
