Description
These flowers were blooming next to a trail near Isabelle Lake in Indian Peaks Wilderness in Colorado. I had gone hiking, hoping to see wildflowers, and was not disappointed!
The Indian Peaks Wilderness was designated as a protected wilderness area in 1978 by an act of Congress. It encompasses 73,391 acres with over 50 lakes, 28 trails covering 133 miles, and six passes across the Continental Divide. Elevations in these wilderness areas vary from 8,400 to over 13,500 feet, from montane to sub-alpine and alpine lifezones. It borders the James Peak Wilderness to the south and Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) to the north.
The Indian Peaks wilderness offers a rugged wilderness experience of jagged windswept peaks, alpine tundra, and a small glacier all within driving distance from Denver. Named for various Native American tribes, the Indian peaks top out over thirteen thousand feet and form a snowy and scenic backdrop to the city of Denver. Much of the terrain is steep and heavily forested with lodgepole pine being the dominant species at the mid to lower elevations. Above treeline (approx. 11,500 ft.) the trees disappear and alpine tundra dominates.
