Description
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge and areas nearby host thousands of Sandhill Cranes every winter between November and February. The cranes spend the night in the water - ponds and rivers - and their days are spent in nearby corn fields where they eat leftover corn. In this image, taken in late afternoon, the cranes are returning to the ponds and lakes for the night.
This image is a composite of a close-up of a flying crane and a landscape with flying cranes in the distance -- the two images were taken within 15 minutes of each other.
